Black Magic Vintage fortified honours WW2 fighter pilot Warrant Officer Leonard Victor Waters (1924-1993). He was the first known aboriginal fighter pilot in the war as distinct from bomber pilots.

As an 18 yo shearer from Nindigully, Qld, he joined the RAAF on 24 August 1942 and trained as a mechanic. Len was accepted for pilot training at Narrandera, graduating in Uranquinty NSW. He attained the rank of Sergeant on 1 July 1944 before being posted to the 78th Kittyhawk squadron in November 1944.

In total he flew 54 sorties over the skies of PNG and Borneo most of them in his kittyhawk nick named “Black Magic” by the previous pilot Denny Baker in honour of the "fuzzy wuzzy angels." The sorties involved ground attacks and fighter sweeps over Japanese held positions in New Guinea & Dutch East Indies during late 1944 and 1945. In 1946 he was promoted to Warrant Officer. Len was a Kamilaroi man who after the war spent most of his working life in St George.
